ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hullo there! I’m Jade, a Lincoln based illustrator and comic artist. I really like tea, dogs and old books.
I graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2011 with a first class honours degree in Illustration, and I started self-publishing my teastained comic series Cafe Suada shortly after that. My style is a fusion of British roots with Japanese influences, and combines digital and traditional techniques. In 2013 I was nominated for Best Emerging Talent in the British Comic Awards, and in 2014 I won the Myriad Editions First Graphic Novel competition with an extract from my graphic novel For the Love of God, Marie!, published July 2016.
I’m also a keen exhibitor, workshop leader and charicaturist and I can often be found at comic events such as Comic Con, Thoughtbubble, Comiket and others.
Oh wow, one hundred fans - and that doesn't even include everyone that isn't a member of SJ!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME. I've been getting some wonderful encouragement both here and on other sites ... and also a recurring question about how I do the comic, which I thought I'd take a mo to answer ^_^
The textured background is what most people are curious about - it's actually just a really old A5 school book that wasn't written in, so I scanned the pages and use them as a base (screened at a lower opacity over a flat brown base in Photoshop). I then work over that with a sketch, and ink with an angled brush in a feeble attempt to resemble a nib pen's strokes XD Oh, I always do the lettering before inking the art, both the handwritten and computer ones. After that I add some flat colour and the dot tones, again on screened layers. Any other embellishments like the tea stains (which are actually from a handy set of Photoshop brushes) go on last.
And thassabout it! ^.^ In a nutshell, it's done from start to finish in Photoshop CS4. Saves me a bundle in material costs!! Bwahaha.
Also might I add: I've drawn two animals so far in this comic. That's more than in any other comic I've drawn pfft ._. Animals are tough, don'cha know!
